It is worth mentioning that I haven't actually lost 3 iPods, I've lost the same iPod 3 times. As it happens I am pretty good at losing things, but I don't normally get it back. This iPod just kept turning up like a bad penny. This time though, I lost it for good along with the 80gb of music that I've been hoarding on it.
Sometimes I wonder - if you took all of the stuff I've lost over the years and put it in one place, what would it look like? Amongst (many) other things, there'd be at least 20 black cardigans in there, loads of crap I left on buses when I was at school (think hockey sticks, technology folders, things of that ilk), one Dakine mitten that I lost up the Remarks a few weeks ago that I would actually really like back, a Samsung phone that was quite decent for it's time, there'd be a collection of assorted house keys - probably for my parent's old house in Moneyrea mostly, and lots of random jigsaw pieces.
Anyway, except for a few shitty old hard drives with a mish mash collection of Stuff I Sought Out and Stuff I Just Got From Other People's Collections, I've had to pretty much start from scratch. This is severely disheartening.
When I started trying to figure out what I wanted back first, the things that came into my head were the albums that are as familiar as old friends. You know the ones that you can put on after a few months and still automatically cue up the opening bars of the next song in your head when the current one finishes?
Here are some of the first ones that spring to mind;
- Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf (gives me 2003 nostalgia big time)
- Justin Timberlake - Future/Sex/Love/Sounds (this is a good shower album - went to see this tour for my birthday with Jo)
- The XX - Islands
- Tapes 'n' Tapes - The Loon
- Chase & Status - No More Idols
- PJ Harvey - Stories From the City, Stories from the Sea (another 2003 one)
- Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (this just has some AMAZING tracks on it - Cherub Rock, Mayonaise, Today)
- Jurassic 5 LP (chiiiiiill)
- Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
- Fat Freddy's Drop - Based on a True Story
- Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
- Jetplane Landing - Once Like a Spark (gives me good Belfast vibes)
- Gomez - Bring it On
- Foo Fighters - The Colour the Shape (Joanna Savage gave me this for Xmas in 5th year at school. Listened to it on repeat for a looooooong time)
- Audioslave - Audioslave (more 2003 - it was a good year for me!!)
- Green Day - Dookie (always remember Karen Porter bringing this back from Canada along with a poster of the album cover which I eventually inherited)
- Roni Size/Reprazent - New Forms
- Fiona Apple - Tidal (late night Gin + screechalong session with Caitlin springs to mind)
- Björk - Homogenic
- Faith No More - especially Midlife Crisis
